First biogas pipeline in the Netherlands

On march 4 the first biogas pipeline in the Netherlands went into operation. The 13 km long pipeline runs from a biogas producing farm in Nieuweroord to an upgrading plant in Wijster. The Wijster upgrading plant is part of an existing biogas plant fed with green waste.

The farm produces 800 m3 of biogas per hour. The pipeline trajectory was picked so nearby biogas producing farms can connect to it. The biogas is upgraded to natural gas quality and injected in the local grid. In addition the upgrading plant also produces CO2 which is used in greenhouses and industry.
